Historic Homes Tour - History

History of the Strathmore Tour

Each year on the third Saturday in June, the Strathmore Neighborhood opens its doors to the roughly one-thousand visitors who arrive to explore the architecturally and historically significant homes that surround Syracuse’s Onondaga Park on the southwest side of the city. Featuring irreplaceable architecture from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the tour offers an eclectic blend of dwellings that range in size and scale from modest cottages to grand estates. Mirroring the rich diversity of the many architectural motifs found in the neighborhood, the tour can usually be depended upon to offer a wide selection of styles to view including craftsman-style bungalows, handsome Four-Squares, elegant Colonial Revivals and old world Tudors.

Sponsored by the Onondaga Park Association, the tour began in 1994 in an effort to raise funds for the preservation of the park. For those who live in Strathmore however, the tour represents much more than that. It is also a celebration of community —of the many homeowners who graciously share their wonderful homes and of the nearly two-hundred neighborhood volunteers who donate their time to this endeavor every year. It is also the implicit desire of every volunteer who strives to make the tour a reality, that others too will come to see our neighborhood as we do and that when exposed to the beauty, history, and charm that is Strathmore, will come to regard it as an eminently worthwhile community in which to live, work, and raise a family.
